The Open Championship Golf Betting
The Open Championship for Golf
The Open Championship is also known as The British Open and is one of the biggest tournaments in golf. It is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the biggest and most prestigious events, and it is also the oldest of the four and one of the most sought-after. The very first time the Open Championship was played was back in 1860 when it was held at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. There is over £8 million in the prize pool for this tournament and every year it provides a showcase of emerging, established and iconic talent from the sport of golf. Some of the most recent winners include the Americans Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson, who won in 2017 and 2015 respectively. Northern Ireland based Rory McIlroy won in 2014, while Francesco Molinari won in 2018, becoming the first Italian to win the tournament in 147 stagings. In 2016, Henrik Stenson achieved something similar when he became the first Swede to win The Open Championship. His victory has gone down in history thanks to the fierce battle he fought with Phil Mickelson, one that resulted in the Swede achieving the best ever score for The Open Championship.
The Format of The Open Championship
The staging of The Open Championship changes every year, but there are a few constants. As you would expect for the British Open, it’s always staged in the United Kingdom and is often split between Scotland and England. It’s also always played on a coastal links course, which helps to keep some tradition in the game as this is how the sport of golf was first played hundreds of years ago. The length and par of The Open Championship change depending on where it is staged, but it’s regarded as one of the most entertaining majors and one that tests the world’s best players to their limit. The Open Championship is staged in July, when the British weather is at its most forgiving, and there are 156 players battling for the ultimate prize. These players are whittled down from many more via an extensive qualifying process. The format is 72-hole stroke play and the event is played over the course of 4 days from Thursday to Saturday. Once 36 holes have been played, only those in the top 70 will move onto the final 36 holes. If there is a tie for the lead after 72 holes, there is a short playoff followed by sudden death.
