Tennis in the UK!
Grand Slam Tennis Bets!
Tennis is one of the most popular non-team sports in the United Kingdom, and one that really comes alive during the summer, when the Wimbledon tournament comes to town. The UK has had a strange relationship with this sport over the years, because despite sharing a deep love for the game and its history, it’s never really had a true champion. In recent years Andy Murray has bucked that trend and there have also been some recent prospects in the female game, but there hasn’t been anyone to contend with the legacies created by the greatest players ever, and for many generations there was barely a top 5 player. Still, that hasn’t stopped UK fans from getting behind this sport and throwing the full weight of their British pride behind whatever national star rises through the ranks and makes themselves known to current generations. Tennis is often seen as a summer sport, as this is when it’s biggest events are broadcast. And unlike football or horse racing, where there are events every day, tennis has a “less is more” model that always guarantees a big following during the main Grand Slam events like Wimbledon, the French Open and the US Open, which run from May to September.
Placing Tennis Bets
Tennis is a sport played by individuals and contested over major knockout tournaments, which means there are some very unique and interesting sport bets to place. Tennis bets include the usual Win/Lose market, albeit without an option for a Draw (there can be no such outcome in a game of tennis) as well as handicap bets. These bets create a theoretical handicap, adding games to one player’s total and taking them away from another’s. It means that if Player A is heavily favoured to beat Player B and has odds that are far too low to be worthwhile, a handicap can give them additional points to clear in exchange for improved odds. Outright bets are also popular during major tennis grand slam events. These tennis bets allow players to stake money on the eventual winners and placers of specific tournaments, with each-way bets that payout partial amounts if the player makes it to the final and gets knocked out, and place bets that payout if they make it no further than the semi-final. There are a total of 256 players taking part in the Wimbledon tournament and in the other big grand slams, which means there are a lot of potential bets to place and players to follow.
Scoring in Tennis
The restricted scoring nature of the game of tennis means there are no Over/Under score bets to place. Each game ends when players score 4 points (the scoring system counts them as 15, 30, 40 and then game) and they need 6 of these in order to win the set, unless they are fewer than 2 games in front, in which case a 7th set and then a tiebreaker will be needed. Most matches are played over a ‘best of 3’ or ‘best of 5’ sets, which essentially means that the winner is the first to 2 or the first to 3. Despite these rigid scoring systems, tennis scores are still not predictable, so there are still some big odds to be found on the Final Score markets. Gamblers can choose to bet on the score of each set or they can simply opt to bet on the final set score. They can also place bets on how many sets will be played. Needless to say, there are a lot of bets to place and a lot of fun to be had, just make sure you gamble responsibly when betting on tennis and other sports. If it stops being fun, it’s time to take a break!
